The activity focused on the design and development of an Automated Pipe Cutting and Beveling Machine using plasma technology, created through the collaboration of multiple qualifications from RTC-NCR. The highlight of the activity was the successful fabrication and assembly of the machine, which integrated mechanical and electrical systems to meet the needs of the SMAW assessment process. This project demonstrated the strength of collaboration between trainers and trainees from different fields, all working toward a common goal of innovation and enhanced productivity.
The activity involved three key groups: PV Systems Installation, SMAW, and Mechatronics Servicing. Each group played a vital role in the machine’s development. PV Systems Installation trainees handled the high-voltage wiring, power circuit, and main supply from August to September 2023. The SMAW trainees focused on fabricating and assembling the prototype’s body frame during the same period. Mechatronics Servicing trainees contributed by completing automation wiring, testing, and commissioning of the machine from May to June 2023. Together, they achieved the goal of building a fully functional prototype.
The activity took place at the RTC-NCR Building in 2023. The PV Systems Installation team, led by Sir Junrey Eguna, included trainees Glenvi Ojeda, Raffy Gonzales, and Rene Camino. The SMAW team, led by Christian Picones, was composed of Jerald Bacuño, Darwin Cuachin, and James Carlos. The Mechatronics Servicing team, headed by Regie Pallasigui, included Jonathan Arbiso, Henry Garque, and Julius Torlao. The collaboration between these groups resulted in the successful development of a practical tool for the RTC-NCR community.
This project addressed a significant need within the SMAW assessment by creating a machine that improves efficiency and precision in pipe cutting. It also served as a valuable hands-on learning experience for all trainees involved, as they applied their skills in a real-world project. The activity highlighted the importance of teamwork and technical proficiency across different disciplines.
